How to open and view a docx file

Ever so often Microsoft comes out with a new updated version of one of its products. This time
it was for Word 2007. ( They have decided that the doc file extension wasn't good enough or something like that...well I don't really know...I just assume things... so on to the solution on how to fix the docx problem)

As always there are many ways to get to a solution.
1. If you use an older version of Microsoft Word then all you need to do is to install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack. It will work for for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats. Just click here to be taken to the Microsoft website.

2. Open Office
If like me, you use Open Office, then all you need to do is to update your version of Open office.
click here to get the latest version

3. If you are not in the mood or can not update/download software then
you can convert it (from docx to doc; pdf; ect.) online for free/gratis
Here are a few sites:
i. ZAMAR.COM (this is the one I used, more file extension formats)
ii. http://docx-converter.com/

4. And if you use MAC (Macintosh) then you will need
Microsoft Entourage 2008 for Mac, Web Services Edition Update
It applies to Office 2008, Entourage 2008, Office 2008 Special Media Edition

As always feel free to comment

Philips lets flat light out of lab

Philips lets flat light out of lab

Ever wished you could have day quality light at night, when having friends over or reading your favourite book? A light bulb that radiates light as good as natural daylight instead of that yellow glow one gets from traditional Incandescent light bulbs. Well then you should consider OLED. What is OLED? It is a thin sheet of glass that is coated with a micro particle powdered substance that emits light evenly from the whole surface not just from a single source(point)as with traditional light bulbs.
This waver thin "sheets of light", which you can wrap around just about anything, cost about $100 per square inch.
Right now it still in its infant stages and Philips is currently releasing it to consumers for experimentation purposes.
There are various applications for this product and the makers of this product is hoping to get artist, architects and designers to collaborate on the development of products.
Have a look at the video to see how Lumiblade is being used.

You can get more info on this product by visiting Philips website click here.

First person: Spaceship firm gets Mideast boost

Ever thought of leaving earth behind to go live on the moon. Well...we all may do just that very soon. Well not really live on the moon, but now with the help of Sir Richard Branson you can take a flight into space. How much will this set you back? they don't say. What they do say is that it will cost less than what it did in the past. I assume just a couple of millions. (probably not)

So next time you get angry at your significant other and you tell them to fly to the moon they might just do that:)

Below is a short video. Watch it and enjoy.

What environmental and social impact do you have when consuming products?
Or how does the company you do business with affect our environment. Ever think about it?
I guess you don't. I'll be honest, I don't think about it that often myself. I just assume
that companies would do the right thing.

Are Netbooks Better for Students than Notebook PCs?

College students love their laptops. But for those who want a smaller option, netbooks may be a viable choice. Here's a look at the pros and cons.

... so what is the conclusion...Unless you really know what you're doing, a netbook is not a good substitute for your primary PC or MacBook. You can't watch DVDs or install new programs from CDs onto it without an external drive, and it won't run Windows or Mac programs. Even if you buy a Windows netbook, it probably
won't run Windows programs all that well just because it's so small.

On the other hand, if you already have a main PC or Mac and you need something smaller to tote around campus, a netbook might be what you're looking for. It's not as convenient as a nice smartphone, like an iPhone or a Palm Centro, but it has a bigger screen and an actual keyboard, and it's a lot easier to carry to lectures than a full-sized notebook is.

If your back is already hurting from carrying those textbooks around, shedding a few pounds from your notebook computer may help. Just make sure to shop around and read reviews first, and try one in person so you'll know if you could get used to it. Good luck!

How to make Windows XP boot faster

Below I will mention one way of doing just that.
(use at own risk, if you don't know what you doing don't do it!:)

Step by step
1. Open notepad, type "del c:\windows\prefetch\ntosboot-*.* /q" (without the quotes) & save as "ntosboot.bat" in c:\
2. From the Start menu, select "Run..." & type "gpedit.msc".
3. Double click "Windows Settings" under "Computer Configuration" and double click again on "Shutdown" in the right window.
4. In the new window, click "add", "Browse", locate your "ntosboot.bat" file & click "Open".
5. Click "OK", "Apply" & "OK" once again to exit.
6. From the Start menu, select "Run..." & type "devmgmt.msc".
7. Double click on "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"
8. Right click on "Primary IDE Channel" and select "Properties".
9. Select the "Advanced Settings" tab then on the device or 1 that doesn't have 'device type' greyed out select 'none' instead of 'autodetect' & click "OK".
10. Right click on "Secondary IDE channel", select "Properties" and repeat step 9.
11. Reboot your computer.

Hope this help. Let me know how it worked for you. Any other ideas, leave comment.

What is the internet?

The Internet is a computer network made up of a great number of networks worldwide. No one really knows how many computers are connected to the Internet. However, it is believed, that it is in the millions.

The general understanding is that there is no one authority in charge of the Internet. There are, however, organizations which develop technical aspects of this network and set the standards for creating applications on it, but no specific governing body is in control. Private companies own the Internet backbone (through which Internet traffic flows).

Each and every computer on the Internet transmit information to one another by using TCP/IP which stands for (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) . Computers on the Internet use a client/server architecture. What does it mean? It means that the remote server provides files and services to the user's local client computer. Software can thus be installed on a client computer enabling one to take advantage of the latest access technology.

An Internet user has access to a wide variety of services such as e-mail (electronic mail), news, membership sites, interactive gathering, live broadcasting, shopping, file transfers, file hosting and so on.

The Internet basically consists of a variety of access protocols. Most of these protocols have programs which allow users to search and retrieve material that is made available by the protocol.
